About KARINOYA

KARINOYA (Karinoyado, a general incorporated association in preparation) works for people who are easily isolated:
those who cannot go out because of illness or disability, and foreign residents living in Japan.
We operate mainly online, funded by donations,
around two pillars: a virtual place to belong and a multilingual place to learn.

To build a society where everyone can live as themselves, we deliver opportunities for belonging, learning, work and connection.

A society where each person's potential can bloom, where people support one another, and where what we receive is handed on to the next person.

Everything we do happens online. We connect with people across Japan and overseas, beyond the barriers of place, physical condition and language.

SOCIAL ISSUE

The problem we want to solve

Places to belong, chances to learn, the information you need for daily life — they all exist in this society.
But for people who cannot leave home, people facing a language barrier, and people who only have time at night, much of it simply never reaches them.

People who cannot go out because of illness or disability

There may be a place to go, but they cannot get there. They fall through the cracks of support and communities that assume face-to-face contact, and the chances simply to talk with someone grow fewer.

Foreign residents and visitors in Japan

Garbage sorting, noise, disaster preparedness, the etiquette of hot springs and shrines. Japan has many "unwritten rules", and not knowing them is enough to create friction with the neighbourhood.

The limits of existing support

Local governments and community groups work hard on in-person Japanese classes and awareness campaigns, but their people and time are limited, and the benefits cannot reach everyone.

Our answer

Nobody gets blamed. Online, at any time, in your own language. We combine a low-barrier "place to belong" with "learning", and deliver both together.

An online community (Discord)

We run a "Karinoyado" channel on Discord, where people chat by voice and text and play games together. You can join even if you can't go out, even in the middle of the night, even without showing your face. It's fine to just be there without saying a word.

In preparation for a full launch in fiscal 2027

A multilingual online learning system for Japanese culture and everyday manners

We are creating online learning materials, in 12 languages, on what you need to know to live in or visit Japan: garbage sorting, public manners, disaster preparedness, transport, medical care, the etiquette of shrines and hot springs, and more. Beyond text, we combine video, audio and quizzes so that learning is easy regardless of disability or Japanese ability.

Sharing and giving back

Those who have money give money. Those who have knowledge give knowledge. Those who have time give time. And those who feel they have nothing right now can still support someone simply by being there. We give shape, in our daily activities, to a cycle where no one is fixed as giver or receiver.

Our Discord "Karinoyado" is looked after by its host, Shell Sea. If it's your first time, just say hello. There are no conditions for joining. Night after night, the people gathered here wander the world of Minecraft together and chat about nothing in particular.

NAME

The meaning behind
the name "Karinoyado"

Since ancient times, Japan has had a way of seeing this life as a kari no yado — a temporary lodging.
An inn for one night does not exist for any single person.
One night it welcomes one traveller; the next day, another.
While they are there, they support each other; and one day, each sets out on their own road.

A place where someone can stop by for a while on the journey of life.
You don't have to stay here forever.
Rest safely for now, then walk on again at your own pace.
That is the kind of "temporary lodging" we hope to be.

News

  • Our official website has been renewed.
  • The articles of association for Karinoyado General Incorporated Association were drawn up. Notarisation and registration with the Legal Affairs Bureau will follow.
  • The first business-planning meeting was held, setting out the outline of the multilingual online learning system for Japanese culture and everyday manners, starting in fiscal 2027.
  • We opened a "Karinoyado" channel on Discord as an online place to belong. Every night people chat by voice and text and play games together (currently Minecraft). Many independent VTubers take part too.
