Answer and explanation
「は」 marks the topic.
Basis: N5 Summary of Linguistic Competence and the format of the sample questions
JLPT N5
Half of N5 grammar is decided by particles. You practice telling apart and using “who,” “what,” “where (at),” and “where (to)” with a single particle character.
「は」 marks the topic (“as for …”), and 「が」 is used when newly introducing the subject or emphasizing it. 「わたしは学生です」, 「だれが来ましたか」, 「田中さんが来ました」. At N5, the basic patterns 「〜は〜です」 and 「〜が あります/います」 are tested more than the fine differences between 「は」 and 「が」.
「を」 marks the object of an action (本を読む, 水を飲む). 「に」 marks time (7時に起きる), place (東京に住む, 机の上にある), direction (学校に行く), and the other party (友だちに会う, 母に電話する). 「で」 marks the place of an action (図書館で勉強する) and means (バスで行く, 日本語で話す). The difference between 「に」 and 「で」 for places: 「ある・いる・住む」 take 「に」, and if you do an action, use 「で」.
「へ」 marks direction (駅へ行く) and can be swapped with 「に」. 「と」 means “together with” (友だちと行く) and joins items in a list (パンと牛乳). 「も」 means “also” (わたしも学生です). 「から」 and 「まで」 mark the start and the end (9時から5時まで, 東京から大阪まで).
Grammar question formats: The first is “Sentence grammar 1 (judging the grammatical form),” where you choose the particle or word form that goes in a blank. The second is “Sentence grammar 2 (sentence composition),” where you arrange four scrambled words in the correct order and answer which word goes in the marked position (★). The third is “Text grammar,” where you fill in blanks in a short text.
Tips for ordering questions: first use the particles as clues to make “noun + particle” chunks, and place the verb last. In Japanese the verb comes at the end of the sentence, so fix the verb at the end first and then arrange the rest, and you won't get lost.
| 助詞 (joshi, particle) | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| は | Topic | わたしは 学生です (I am a student) |
| が | Subject, emphasis | だれが 来ましたか/ねこが います (Who came? / There is a cat) |
| を | Object of an action | 本を 読みます (I read a book) |
| に | Time, place (existence), direction, other party | 7時に/机の上に/学校に/友だちに (at 7 / on the desk / to school / to a friend) |
| で | Place of an action, means | 図書館で/バスで/日本語で (at the library / by bus / in Japanese) |
| へ | Direction | 駅へ 行きます (I go to the station) |
| と | Together with, listing | 友だちと/パンと牛乳 (with a friend / bread and milk) |
| も | 〜も (also) | わたしも 学生です (I am a student too) |
| から・まで | Start, end | 9時から 5時まで (from 9 o'clock to 5 o'clock) |

Verbs are divided into Group 1 (書く・話す), Group 2 (食べる・見る), and Group 3 (する・来る). This classification is the foundation for the て-form, ない-form, and た-form.
Learn Japanese verbs in the dictionary form (書く・食べる・する) and divide them into three groups. Group 1: the dictionary form ends in a 「う」-column sound (書く・話す・読む・買う・待つ・帰る). Group 2: ends in 「る」, with an 「い」-column or 「え」-column sound before it (見る・食べる・起きる・寝る). Group 3: only two verbs, する and 来る. Be careful: 「帰る」, 「入る」, 「走る」, and 「知る」 look like Group 2 but are Group 1.
ます-form (polite form): Group 1 changes the 「う」-column ending to the 「い」-column + ます (書く→書きます, 話す→話します). Group 2 changes 「る」 to ます (食べる→食べます). Group 3: 「する→します」 and 「来る→来ます(きます)」. N5 conversation and listening proceed mostly in the ます-form.
The て-form is the foundation of many N5 grammar expressions, such as 「〜てください」 (request), 「〜ています」 (progressive/state), 「〜てもいいです」 (permission), and 「〜てから」 (order). Group 1 changes: う・つ・る→って (買って・待って・帰って) / む・ぶ・ぬ→んで (読んで・遊んで・死んで) / く→いて (書いて), ぐ→いで (泳いで) / す→して (話して). Exception: 行く→行って. Group 2: る→て (食べて). Group 3: して・来て(きて).
ない-form (negative): Group 1 changes the 「う」-column ending to the 「あ」-column + ない (書く→書かない, 買う→買わない). Group 2: 「る→ない」. Group 3: 「しない・来ない(こない)」. The polite negative is 「〜ません」. The past is 「〜ました」 and the past negative is 「〜ませんでした」. These four (〜ます・〜ません・〜ました・〜ませんでした) are the basic set for N5 verbs.
How it is tested: Questions that ask you to choose the verb form that goes before 「( )ください」 or 「( )います」 in the grammatical-form judgment questions appear frequently. The shortcut is to say the て-form changes aloud, group by group.
| Ending of the dictionary form | て形 (te-form) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| う・つ・る | って | 買う→買って/待つ→待って/帰る→帰って |
| む・ぶ・ぬ | んで | 読む→読んで/遊ぶ→遊んで/死ぬ→死んで |
| く | いて | 書く→書いて (exception: 行く→行って) |
| ぐ | いで | 泳ぐ→泳いで |
| す | して | 話す→話して |

「高い→高くない→高かった」 and 「静か→静かじゃない→静かでした」. This lesson brings together the conjugation of the two kinds of adjectives for negation, past tense, and connection.
There are two kinds of adjectives: い-adjectives, which end in 「い」 (高い・おいしい・新しい), and な-adjectives, which take 「な」 to modify a noun (静か・きれい・元気・便利). 「きれい」 and 「嫌い」 end in 「い」 but are な-adjectives, which is a classic N5 trap.
Conjugation of い-adjectives: 高い (present) → 高くない (negative) → 高かった (past) → 高くなかった (past negative). The polite form adds 「です」 at the end (高いです・高くないです・高かったです). 「いい(良い)」 is special: its negative and past are 「よくない・よかった」.
Conjugation of な-adjectives: 静かです → 静かじゃないです (静かではありません) → 静かでした → 静かじゃなかったです. When modifying a noun, it is 「静かな部屋」. Noun sentences (学生です) follow the same conjugation pattern, so learn them together.
Connection (joining two adjectives): い-adjectives use 「〜くて」 (安くておいしい), and な-adjectives and nouns use 「〜で」 (静かできれい・学生で日本人). Making an adverb: い-adjectives use 「〜く」 (早く起きる), and な-adjectives use 「〜に」 (静かに話す).
How it is tested: In the grammatical-form judgment questions, you choose the conjugation (negative, past, or connection). In sentence composition, you rearrange 「〜くて〜」 sentences. Combinations with adverbs such as 「あまり〜ない」, 「とても〜」, and 「ちょっと〜」 also appear.
| い-adjective (高い) | な-adjective (静か) | |
|---|---|---|
| Present | 高いです | 静かです |
| Negative | 高くないです | 静かじゃないです |
| Past | 高かったです | 静かでした |
| Past negative | 高くなかったです | 静かじゃなかったです |
| Modifying a noun | 高い本 | 静かな部屋 |
| Connection | 高くて | 静かで |
| Adverb | 高く | 静かに |

「机の上に本があります」 and 「教室に学生がいます」. Use 「あります」 for things and 「います」 for people and animals. Learn it together with position words (上・下・中・前・後ろ・横・隣).
Basic existence sentences: 「(place)に(thing)が あります」 and 「(place)に(person or animal)が います」. 「ある」 is for non-moving things and plants, and 「いる」 is for people and animals. 「駅の前にコンビニがあります」 and 「公園に子どもがいます」.
Position words: 上(うえ)・下(した)・中(なか)・外(そと)・前(まえ)・後ろ(うしろ)・横(よこ)・隣(となり)・そば・近く・右・左・間(あいだ). The pattern is 「noun + の + position word + に」 (机の上に・駅の近くに・銀行と郵便局の間に).
「あります・います」 for possession: 「わたしは車があります」 and 「弟がいます」. The same verbs are used when talking about things you have and about family. 「時間があります」 and 「お金がありません」 also use this pattern.
Questions and answers: 「机の上に何がありますか」 / 「何もありません」, and 「教室にだれがいますか」 / 「だれもいません」. The pattern 「何も・だれも + negative」 also appears in listening.
How it is tested: choosing 「あります/います」, choosing position words, and the particles in 「〜に〜が」. In listening “Point comprehension,” there are questions where you look at a picture and listen for positions, such as 「かばんはどこにありますか」.

The core of N5 daily-life situations: making a request, asking for permission, saying something must not be done, and saying what you want to do. All of them are decided by the verb form.
Request: 「〜てください」 (窓を開けてください). To ask politely, say 「すみませんが、〜てください」. To decline, say 「すみません、ちょっと…」. Asking for permission: 「〜てもいいですか」 (ここで写真を撮ってもいいですか). The answer is 「はい、どうぞ」 or 「いいえ、〜てはいけません」.
Prohibition: 「〜てはいけません」 (ここでたばこを吸ってはいけません). 「〜ないでください」 is a request meaning “please don't do it” (ドアを閉めないでください). On signs and notices, words such as 「禁煙」 and 「立入禁止」 are written in kanji, so they also appear in Reading “information retrieval.”
Desire: 「〜たいです」 (水を飲みたいです). Change the 「ます」 of the verb's ます-form to 「たい」. The negative is 「〜たくないです」 and the past is 「〜たかったです」 (conjugated like an い-adjective). 「〜が ほしいです」 (新しい靴がほしいです) is for things. The object of 「〜たい」 can take either 「を」 or 「が」, but 「を」 is the basic one at N5.
Invitations and suggestions: 「〜ませんか」 (一緒に昼ご飯を食べませんか) → 「いいですね。〜ましょう」. 「〜ましょうか」 is an offer (手伝いましょうか). These three appear together in conversation questions.
How it is tested: In the grammatical-form judgment questions, you choose the expression that fits the situation. In listening “Verbal expressions,” you look at a picture and choose 「何と言いますか」 (what do you say?), for example, when you want to borrow something → 「これを借りてもいいですか」.
| Meaning | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Request | 〜てください | 窓を 開けてください (Please open the window) |
| Request (negative) | 〜ないでください | ドアを 閉めないでください (Please don't close the door) |
| Asking permission | 〜てもいいですか | ここで 写真を 撮ってもいいですか (May I take a photo here?) |
| Prohibition | 〜てはいけません | ここで たばこを 吸ってはいけません (You must not smoke here) |
| Desire (action) | 〜たいです | 水を 飲みたいです (I want to drink water) |
| Desire (thing) | 〜がほしいです | 新しい 靴が ほしいです (I want new shoes) |
| Invitation | 〜ませんか/〜ましょう | 一緒に 食べませんか/食べましょう (Won't you eat together? / Let's eat) |

「雨だから行きません」, 「ご飯を食べてから出かけます」, and 「電車のほうがバスより速いです」. Three basic N5 expressions for connecting sentences.
Reason: 「〜から」 (時間がありませんから、タクシーで行きます). It can follow either the polite form or the plain form. When asked 「どうして〜か」, answer with 「〜からです」. 「〜ので」 is N4 and later, so at N5 it is enough to be able to use 「から」.
Order: 「〜てから」 (手を洗ってから食べます), 「〜て、〜」 (朝起きて、顔を洗って、朝ご飯を食べます), 「〜あとで」 (食事のあとで薬を飲みます), and 「〜まえに」 (寝る前に歯を磨きます). Before 「まえに」 comes the dictionary form; before 「あとで」 comes 「noun + の」 or the た-form.
Comparison: 「AはBより(adjective)です」 (東京は大阪より大きいです), 「AとBとどちらが〜ですか」 → 「Aのほうが〜です」, and 「Aは〜の中でいちばん〜です」 (日本で富士山がいちばん高いです). Use the question words 「どちら」, 「どれ」, and 「なに」 appropriately (「どちら」 for two things, 「どれ」 for three or more).
Expressions of time: 「〜とき」 (子どものとき・暇なとき・日本に来たとき) and 「〜ながら」 (音楽を聞きながら勉強します) are at the border between the end of N5 and N4. First, make sure of 「〜から」, 「〜てから」, and 「〜より」.
How it is tested: In sentence composition (ordering), the order in 「〜てから」 and 「〜より〜のほうが」 is tested. In text grammar, you choose 「から/まえに/あとで」 from the surrounding context.
