What you will learn in this chapter
N5 reading texts are short, 80 to 250 characters long. In most questions, you can find the answer simply by looking for “when, where, who, and what.”
“Which bus should I take?” and “How much do I pay?” These are questions where you search a table for the item that meets the conditions. Split the conditions into two and eliminate options one after the other.
1. How to read short texts: notes, notices, emails
N5 reading texts are short, 80 to 250 characters long. In most questions, you can find the answer simply by looking for “when, where, who, and what.”
N5 reading has three types. ① Comprehension (short passages): read sentences of about 80 characters on study, daily life, or work, or texts on familiar topics, and understand the content. ② Comprehension (medium passages): texts of about 250 characters on everyday topics. ③ Information retrieval: find the information you need in guides and notices. There are about 6 questions in total.
Order for reading short texts: first read the question → read the passage → underline the part that answers the question. In Japanese you cannot tell whether a sentence is negative or affirmative until the end (the 「ません」 in 「行きません」 comes at the end of the sentence), so it is important to get in the habit of reading to the end of the sentence.
Standard forms of notes and emails: 「〜さんへ」 (to ...), 「〜より」 (from ...), the date, and the purpose. Times, places, and numbers are the answers, as in 「明日、10時に駅で会いましょう」 and 「会議は3時からです」. 「〜てください」 and 「〜ないでください」 are instruction sentences and are often asked about in reading.
After 「でも」 comes something opposite to what came before: 「安いです。 But it doesn't taste good.”).
How it is tested: 「この人はあした何をしますか」 (What will this person do tomorrow?), 「どうして〜ましたか」 (Why did ...?), and 「メールを読んだ人は、まず何をしますか」 (What will the person who read the email do first?). When asked for a reason, look for the part before 「〜から」.
Terms
Questions where you choose what matches the content of the passage
Questions where you find the information you need in a guide or table
接続詞 (conjunctions)
Words that connect sentences
Examples
山田より —— Where will 田中さん go tomorrow? (The memo says: “To Tanaka: Let's meet in front of the company at 9 o'clock tomorrow. From Yamada.”)
Answer and reasoning In front of the company. 「9時に」 is the time and 「会社の前で」 is the place. 「会いましょう」 is an invitation, so it is an agreement for the two to meet.

2. Information retrieval: searching timetables, guides, and menus
“Which bus should I take?” and “How much do I pay?” These are questions where you search a table for the item that meets the conditions. Split the conditions into two and eliminate options one after the other.
Format of information retrieval: you look at a poster, flyer, timetable, shop guide, menu, or the like, and choose the one item that meets the conditions in the question. You don't need to read the whole text; you only search the table for the conditions in the question (time, day of the week, price, number of people).
Steps: ① Write out the conditions in the question (for example, “Saturday,” “morning,” “2 children”). ② Check the headings of the table (day, time, fee). ③ Apply the conditions one at a time and eliminate the ones that don't fit. ④ The one that remains is the answer. When there are two conditions, narrowing down with one first is faster.
Reading numbers: 「10:00〜17:00」 = from 10 o'clock to 5 o'clock (in the afternoon). Be exact about the meanings of 「〜まで」, 「〜から」, 「〜以上」, and 「〜以下」. 「18歳以上」 includes 18-year-olds.
Words common in guides: 開く(あく) (to open) and 閉まる(しまる) (to close), 営業時間 (business hours), 休み(定休日) (day off / regular closing day), 無料(ただ) (free), 有料 (paid), 割引 (discount), 予約 (reservation), 受付 (reception), 入口・出口 (entrance / exit), and 禁煙・喫煙 (no smoking / smoking). You don't have to be able to read them as long as you understand the meaning, so learn them together with symbols and pictograms.
How it is tested: 「山田さんは 日曜日の 午後に 図書館へ 行きたいです。何時から 何時まで 開いていますか」 (“Yamada wants to go to the library on Sunday afternoon. From what time to what time is it open?”) and 「4人で 食べます。 Which set is the cheapest?”).

Examples
Example: (Notice) 市民プール 平日 10:00〜20:00 土日 9:00〜18:00 休み:水曜日 大人400円 子ども200円 —— (Municipal pool: weekdays 10:00–20:00, Saturday and Sunday 9:00–18:00, closed Wednesday, adults 400 yen, children 200 yen.) You will go on Saturday at 9 a.m. with 1 adult and 1 child. How much is it?
Answer and reasoning 600 yen. At 9 on Saturday it is open. Adult 400 + child 200 = 600 yen.
