A prep lab for JLPT N5. Learn characters and vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening through lessons and questions.

N5 is the level at which you can “understand basic Japanese to some extent.” The goals are to read hiragana, katakana, basic kanji, and short fixed sentences used in daily life, and to follow short, slowly spoken conversations.

Passing guideline

To pass N5 you need a total score of at least 80 out of 180, plus at least 38 in “Language Knowledge (Characters, Vocabulary, Grammar) and Reading” and at least 19 in “Listening.” Falling short in either section means failing. Because the total score is determined by score equating (IRT), aim for a correct-answer rate of about 60–65% as a rule of thumb.

How to study

Each chapter follows this order: “Lesson (read) → Terms → Examples → Practice questions (solve).” First read through the lesson, then check your understanding by opening “Answer and explanation” on the practice questions. The practice tool at the end of each chapter asks questions in random order, and your results are saved only on your own device (no registration is needed, and nothing is sent to a server).

* The explanations are information for study purposes. Please check the official JLPT website for the exam format and schedule.
* The questions are original questions written by our association, following the format of the JLPT's official “Summary of Linguistic Competence Required for Each Level” and its published sample questions. We are not affiliated with the organizers (the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services).
