Basis: N4 Summary of Linguistic Competence and the format of the sample questions
JLPT N4
The entrance to N4 grammar is the plain form (dictionary form, ない-form, た-form, and なかった-form). 「〜と思います」, 「〜と言いました」, and 「〜んです」 all attach to the plain form.
The plain form is used in conversation with friends and family, and before many sentence patterns such as 「〜と思う」, 「〜と言う」, 「〜んです」, 「〜とき」, and 「〜かもしれない」. Verbs: 書く/書かない/書いた/書かなかった. い-adjectives: 高い/高くない/高かった/高くなかった. な-adjectives and nouns: 静かだ/静かじゃない/静かだった/静かじゃなかった.
「〜と思います」: plain form + と思います (あした雨が降ると思います, 田中さんは来ないと思います). な-adjectives and nouns keep 「だ」 (便利だと思います, 学生だと思います). 「〜と言いました」: quoting a statement (母は「早く帰りなさい」と言いました/母は早く帰れと言いました).
「〜んです/〜のです」: explaining a reason or conveying circumstances (頭が痛いんです, 電車が遅れたんです). It is used to answer the question 「どうしたんですか」. な-adjectives and nouns take 「なんです」 (休みなんです, 学生なんです). It appears frequently in conversation questions.
「〜かもしれません」 (possibility), 「〜でしょう」 (conjecture, confirmation), and 「〜はずです」 (conviction). All attach to the plain form (雨が降るかもしれません, 来るでしょう, もう着いているはずです).
How it is tested: in grammatical-form judgment, you choose the form that comes before (plain or polite). A classic mistake is putting 「〜ますと」 before 「〜と思います」.
| Present | Negative | Past | Past negative | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verbs | 書く | 書かない | 書いた | 書かなかった |
| い形容詞 (i-adjective) | 高い | 高くない | 高かった | 高くなかった |
| な形容詞 (na-adjective) | 静かだ | 静かじゃない | 静かだった | 静かじゃなかった |
| Noun | 学生だ | 学生じゃない | 学生だった | 学生じゃなかった |

「日本語が話せます」, 「行こうと思います」, and 「早く来い/来るな」. Three more verb forms are added. Learn the vowel changes of Group 1 by repetition, until they feel natural.
Potential form: Group 1 changes the 「う」 column to the 「え」 column + る (書く→書ける, 話す→話せる, 泳ぐ→泳げる). Group 2 changes 「る」 to 「られる」 (食べる→食べられる, 見る→見られる). Group 3: する→できる, 来る→来られる(こられる). The object of a potential form takes 「が」 (日本語が話せます). 「見える・聞こえる」 are not potential forms; they mean “it naturally becomes so.”
Volitional form (〜よう): Group 1 changes the 「う」 column to the 「お」 column + う (書く→書こう, 行く→行こう), Group 2 changes 「る→よう」 (食べよう), and Group 3 is 「しよう・来よう(こよう)」. 「〜(よ)うと思います」 (来年国へ帰ろうと思います) = intention. It is also used as the plain form of 「〜ましょう」 for invitations.
Imperative form: Group 1 changes the 「う」 column to the 「え」 column (書け・行け・待て), Group 2 changes 「る→ろ」 (食べろ・見ろ), and Group 3 is 「しろ・来い(こい)」. Prohibitive form: dictionary form + な (行くな・見るな). They are strong ways of speaking in everyday conversation, so at N4 they appear in the contexts of “signs, quotations, and emergencies” (「止まれ」, 「入るな」).
「〜なさい」 is an instruction from a parent or teacher (早く寝なさい). 「〜てはいけない/〜なければならない/〜なくてもいい」 (obligation and not needed). The shortened form of 「〜なければなりません」, 「〜なきゃ」, is heard in conversation.
How it is tested: conjugation of the potential form (especially 「られる」 for Group 2; the “ら-dropped” 「食べれる」 is treated as wrong), the form 「〜(よ)うと思う」, and the meaning of the imperative on signs.
| Form | 書く | 食べる | する | 来る |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Potential | 書ける | 食べられる | できる | 来られる |
| Volitional | 書こう | 食べよう | しよう | 来よう |
| Imperative | 書け | 食べろ | しろ | 来い |
| Prohibition | 書くな | 食べるな | するな | 来るな |

Four kinds of “if.” 「〜たら」 is all-purpose, 「〜と」 is a natural result, 「〜ば」 is a hypothesis, and 「〜なら」 picks up what the other person said. This lesson gives one criterion at a time for choosing among them.
「〜たら」: た-form + ら. The most widely usable conditional (雨が降ったら、行きません / 駅に着いたら、電話してください). Intention, requests, and invitations may follow it.
「〜と」: dictionary form / ない-form + と. A natural result, habit, or directions (春になると暖かくなります / ボタンを押すと、水が出ます / まっすぐ行くと、駅があります). Intention, requests, and invitations (〜ましょう・〜てください) cannot follow it.
「〜ば」: Group 1 verbs change the 「う」 column to the 「え」 column + ば (書けば), Group 2 take 「れば」 (食べれば), する→すれば, 来る→来れば. い-adjectives take 「〜ければ」 (安ければ), and な-adjectives and nouns take 「〜なら(ば)」. Hypotheses and general conditions (時間があれば、行きます). 「〜ばよかった」 (regret) is also N4.
「〜なら」: gives advice by picking up the other person's topic (「京都へ行きたいです」「京都なら、秋がいいですよ」). It attaches directly to nouns.
How it is tested: the most important rule is that when the following sentence has 「〜てください」 or 「〜ましょう」, you cannot choose 「〜と」. In sentence composition, the word order of 「〜たら〜」.
| Form | Main meaning | Intention or request in the following clause |
|---|---|---|
| 〜たら | If you do ... / after you do ... | ○ |
| 〜と | When you do ..., it always becomes ... | ✕ |
| 〜ば | If ... (hypothesis) | △ (○ if the preceding part is a state) |
| 〜なら | Picking up the other person's topic | ○ |

「先生が教えてくれた」 and 「友だちに教えてもらった」 describe the same event. The verb changes depending on whose point of view you speak from.
Exchanging things: 「わたしは友だちに本をあげます」 (me → another person), 「友だちはわたしに本をくれます」 (another person → me), and 「わたしは友だちに本をもらいます」 (I receive). 「くれる」 is used only when “I (or someone in my circle) receive.”
Exchanging actions (て-form + あげる / くれる / もらう): 「わたしは友だちに日本語を教えてあげました」, 「友だちはわたしに日本語を教えてくれました」, and 「わたしは友だちに日本語を教えてもらいました」. The last two describe the same event with a different subject.
Polite forms: toward a superior, use 「〜てくださる(くれる)」, 「〜ていただく(もらう)」, and 「〜てさしあげる(あげる)」. 「先生が説明してくださいました」 and 「先生に説明していただきました」. For requests, 「〜ていただけませんか」 is the most polite.
Insiders and outsiders: family are on the 「うち」 (in-group) side. 「母がお弁当を作ってくれました」 (another person → my side). When talking with business contacts, people in your own company are also on the 「うち」 side (「社長が〜てくださった」 is for use inside the company).
How it is tested: choosing 「くれる/もらう/あげる」 in grammatical-form judgment. It is asked together with the particle (「に」 or 「が」). In listening task comprehension, you catch “who did what for whom.”
| Verbs | Subject | Other party | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| あげる | Me / another person | Another person | わたしは 弟に 本を あげた (I gave my younger brother a book) |
| くれる | Another person | Me (my side) | 友だちが わたしに 本を くれた (My friend gave me a book) |

| 〜てもらう | Me | Another person (from) | 友だちに 手伝ってもらった (I had my friend help me) |
| 〜ていただく | Me | Superior | 先生に 教えていただいた (My teacher kindly taught me) |

「先生にほめられました」, 「子どもに野菜を食べさせます」, and 「先生がいらっしゃいます」. The second half of N4, a chapter where verb forms increase all at once.
Passive (〜れる/〜られる): Group 1 changes the 「う」 column to the 「あ」 column + れる (書く→書かれる, 叱る→叱られる), Group 2 changes 「る→られる」 (ほめる→ほめられる), and Group 3 is 「される・来られる」. 「わたしは先生にほめられました」 (the doer of the action is marked with 「に」). The “adversative” passive, where you are inconvenienced (雨に降られた・友だちに来られて勉強できなかった), is also in the N4 range.
Causative (〜せる/〜させる): Group 1 changes the 「う」 column to the 「あ」 column + せる (行く→行かせる), Group 2 changes 「る→させる」 (食べる→食べさせる), and Group 3 is 「させる・来させる」. 「母は子どもに野菜を食べさせます」 (with a transitive verb the other party takes 「に」) and 「先生は学生を立たせました」 (with an intransitive verb, 「を」). 「〜させてください」 (a polite way to ask for permission) appears frequently in conversation and listening.
Respectful language 尊敬語 (raising the other person): 「いらっしゃる (go, come, be)」, 「おっしゃる (say)」, 「なさる (do)」, 「召し上がる (eat, drink)」, 「ご覧になる (see)」, 「お〜になる (お帰りになる)」, and 「〜れる/〜られる (the same form as the passive: 書かれる)」.

How it is tested: the particles (に/を) of the passive and causative, and mix-ups between respectful and humble language (「先生が参ります」 is wrong). In listening verbal expressions, phrases such as 「召し上がりますか」 to a customer.
| Plain | Respectful (other person) | Humble (yourself) |
|---|---|---|
| 行く・来る | いらっしゃる | 参る/伺う |
| いる | いらっしゃる | おる |
