What you will learn in this chapter
N4 reading texts are 100 to 450 characters long. If you read each paragraph separately as “event,” “reason,” and “the author's feelings,” you can answer “why” and “what does the author think” questions.
N4 information retrieval has more conditions: time, fee, eligibility, and how to apply. Get in the habit of viewing a table by “rows” and “columns,” and always read the notes (※) last.
1. How to read medium-length passages: the role of paragraphs and “the author's opinion”
N4 reading texts are 100 to 450 characters long. If you read each paragraph separately as “event,” “reason,” and “the author's feelings,” you can answer “why” and “what does the author think” questions.
N4 reading consists of comprehension (short passages: about 4 questions on texts of 100–200 characters; medium passages: about 4 questions on texts of about 450 characters) and information retrieval (about 2 questions from a guide or notice of about 400 characters). Short passages are letters, memos, and explanations; medium passages are often experience stories or essay-like texts.
How to read paragraphs: the first paragraph often gives “when, where, and what happened,” the middle paragraphs “the reasons and circumstances,” and the last “the author's thoughts and feelings.” For the question 「筆者はどうして〜ましたか」 (“Why did the author ...?”), look in the paragraph with the reason; for 「筆者はこの経験をどう思っていますか」 (“What does the author think of this experience?”), look in the last paragraph.
Demonstratives: practice identifying what 「これ・それ・あれ」 and 「この〜・その〜」 refer to from the sentence just before. Check cause and effect before and after 「それで」, 「そのため」, and 「だから」. 「〜んです」 and 「〜からです」 are markers of a reason.
How to eliminate choices: eliminate information that is not in the text (overstatements and other reasons). An answer choice that contains the same words as the text is not necessarily correct; the correct answer is often a paraphrased choice. Watch for reversals of negative and affirmative.
Time allocation: 55 minutes for grammar and reading together. About 2–3 minutes per reading question is a guideline. Skip questions you don't understand and come back to them at the end.
Terms
Medium passage
A text of about 450 characters
指示語 (demonstratives)
Words such as これ・それ・あれ that refer to earlier content
因果 (cause and effect)
The connection between cause and result
Examples
(Last week I took a train alone for the first time and went to Kyoto. I was in trouble because I didn't know how to buy a ticket, but the station staff kindly taught me. —— Why was the author in trouble?)
Answer and reasoning Because they didn't know how to buy a ticket. The 「〜て」 in 「〜が分からなくて困りました」 marks the reason.

2. Information retrieval: how to search when there are three conditions
N4 information retrieval has more conditions: time, fee, eligibility, and how to apply. Get in the habit of viewing a table by “rows” and “columns,” and always read the notes (※) last.
Subjects of N4 information retrieval: facility guides, event notices, job ads, class recruitment, and transportation guides. Questions are 「〜さんが参加できるのはどれか」 (“Which can ... take part in?”), 「〜さんはいくら払うか」 (“How much will ... pay?”), and 「申し込みはどうするか」 (“How do you apply?”).
Steps: ① Write out all the conditions in the question (for example, Thursday night, 2 adults, first time). ② Check the vertical (items) and horizontal (dates, courses) of the table. ③ Apply the conditions one at a time and eliminate. ④ Read the notes beginning with 「※」, 「注意」, and 「ただし」 to check for exceptions (for example, first-time participants need to pay a separate registration fee).
Calculating fees: the distinction between adults and children, discounts (members, students, groups), and additional fees (first-time registration, material costs). The ranges of 「〜以上」, 「〜未満」, and 「〜以下」. The words 「先着20名」 (first 20 people), 「定員」 (capacity), and 「要予約」 (reservation required).
How to apply: phone, email, counter, internet. The application period (〜まで) and hours. 「当日」 (the day itself), 「前日」 (the day before), and 「〜日前までに」 (by ... days before).
How it is tested: about 2 questions, one asking for “what meets the conditions” and the other for “the fee” or “how to apply.” The answer is often in the notes.
Terms
注意書き (notes)
A supplement beginning with ※, ただし, or 注意. Exceptions and additional conditions are written in it
定員 (capacity)
The upper limit on the number of people who can take part
Examples
Example: (Notice) 市民料理教室 毎週木曜 19:00〜20:30 参加費 1回 1,500円(材料費込み) ※初めての方は登録料500円が必要 ※定員10名・要予約(電話) —— (Municipal cooking class: every Thursday 19:00–20:30; fee 1,500 yen per session (materials included); * first-time participants need a 500 yen registration fee; * capacity 10, reservation required (by phone).) How much does a first-time participant pay?
Answer and reasoning 2,000 yen. Participation fee 1,500 yen + first-time registration fee 500 yen. The notes hold the answer.
