JLPT N4
N4 has about 28 questions in 35 minutes. Conversations get longer, and patterns such as “the plan changes partway through” and “choosing by two conditions” increase. Decide how you will take notes in advance.
Task comprehension (about 8 questions): you listen to a conversation and choose the action the person will take next from four options (pictures or sentences). At N4, information is updated in the middle of the conversation, as in “asked to do A and B, but told B can wait until later → do A first.” Listen to the last remark before deciding on the answer.
Point comprehension (about 7 questions): you hear the question first, read the answer choices, and then listen to the conversation. “Why were they late?”, “What time will they meet?”, “Which will they buy?” In questions about reasons, the first reason given is often denied and the real reason comes later.
Verbal expressions (about 5 questions): you look at a picture and choose what the person with the arrow says from three options. At N4, honorific language (〜ていただけませんか・召し上がりますか・お待ちください) and set phrases for permission, requests, refusals, and apologies appear.
Quick response (about 8 questions): you choose the reply to a single remark from three options. No text is shown, so you decide by sound alone. 「〜てもいい？」 → 「うん、いいよ」, 「〜てくれない？」 → 「いいよ／ごめん、ちょっと…」, 「お疲れさま」 → 「お疲れさま」, 「お先に」 → 「お疲れさま」.
How to take notes: always write down numbers, times, and days of the week. Mark rejected options with a ×, as in “○→×.” Distinguish the people as “man / woman” or “A / B.” This site has no audio, so practice here with text, and finish with the official website's sample questions and audio materials before the real exam.

「〜ていただけませんか」, 「お待ちください」, and 「かしこまりました」. Learn the expressions used in shops, companies, and schools as pairs for the speaker and the responder.
Requests and replies: 「〜ていただけませんか」 → 「はい、いいですよ／すみません、今ちょっと…」. 「〜てもらえる？」 (with friends) → 「いいよ／ごめん」. 「〜てくれる？」 → 「うん」.
Set phrases in shops and companies: 「いらっしゃいませ」 and 「少々お待ちください」 → 「はい」. 「かしこまりました」 (understood). 「お待たせしました」 → 「いいえ」. 「ご注文は お決まりですか」 → 「〜をお願いします」. 「お会計は ご一緒ですか」 → 「別々でお願いします」. 「またお越しください」.
Apologies and replies: 「遅れて すみません」 → 「大丈夫ですよ／気をつけてください」. 「ご迷惑を おかけしました」 → 「いいえ」. 「申し訳ありません」 (a polite apology).
Invitations and refusals: 「今度 一緒に 〜ませんか」 → 「いいですね／その日は 予定が あって…」. 「よかったら どうぞ」 → 「ありがとうございます、いただきます」. 「大丈夫？」 → 「うん、大丈夫」. 「手伝おうか？」 → 「ありがとう、お願い／大丈夫」.
How it is tested: in verbal expressions, the wording changes depending on “customer or clerk” and “boss or subordinate.” It is wrong for a customer to say 「召し上がりますか」 (clerk → customer). In quick responses, quickly judge the form of the question and the form of the reply (answering yes/no or answering with content).
